Documented participant in the 1854 legal action. His First Presbyterian membership and leadership are independently documented in the church's historical records.

Role in the 1854 Case

John R. Lewis joined Noah C. McFarland in seeking habeas corpus relief for the detained freedom seeker in July 1854. Judge Thomas H. Wilkins ordered the man released after hearing the matter.

First Presbyterian Connection

The church's historical membership roll records John R. Lewis as received in 1847. The Sabbath School history later lists Jno. R. Lewis among the superintendents serving after 1854.

Why He Matters

Lewis matters because his direct legal role in the 1854 case overlaps with documented leadership in First Presbyterian. Together with Noah C. McFarland, he shows how Hamilton's legal and Presbyterian networks intersected during the Underground Railroad era.

Evidence caution: Church membership and leadership do not by themselves establish Underground Railroad operation. Lewis's direct documented UGRR-era role is the 1854 habeas corpus action.
