Hamilton Intelligencer, July 27, 1854: “Fugitive Slave Case”

The principal contemporary Hamilton report of the arrest, habeas corpus proceeding, release, and immediate Underground Railroad assistance.

Why this source is central

The article reports that a freedom seeker from Boone County, Kentucky arrived in Hamilton on the train from Cincinnati, was arrested by Marshal Elliott with assistance from Officer Bruen, and was taken to jail. N. C. McFarland and John R. Lewis sought habeas corpus relief before Judge Wilkins. The contemporary reporting connects the released man with Underground Railroad conductors.

This source independently corroborates several people and legal circumstances later remembered by Mark Campbell McMaken.
