Martha Beckett Remembers the United Presbyterian Church

A 92-year-old congregant's published recollections preserve memories of early United Presbyterian worship, David McDill, and nineteenth-century Hamilton.

Why this reminiscence matters

The Hamilton Evening Journal article is headed “Almost a Century of the Christian Life” and states that Mrs. Martha Beckett, age 92, dictated memories of the United Presbyterian Church. Her age, February 1824 birth reference, and Beckett identity align strongly with project records for Martha Woods Beckett, daughter of John Woods.

The article preserves her memories of Rev. David McDill, early Sabbath school, winter travel to worship, congregation families, and a childhood home at Second and Ludlow streets. Because she was recalling childhood events many decades later, the project treats this as retrospective firsthand memory and compares it with earlier records.
