Hamilton County Deed • March 1, 1847

John M. & Martha Jane Cochran to B. B. Rusk

A primary-source deed for approximately 130 acres that gives the Rusk investigation a specific antebellum property to map.

What the deed establishes

The deed records a conveyance from John M. Cochran and Martha Jane Cochran to B. B. Rusk on March 1, 1847. It describes approximately 130 acres in Section 19, Township 3 of the Miami Purchase in Hamilton County, Ohio. The stated consideration appears as $1,950.

The deed is important because Siebert later described Rev. Rusk as owning property in what became Spring Grove Cemetery. The 1847 deed provides a legal description that can now be mapped and compared with historic land and cemetery boundaries.

Evidence boundary: the deed does not identify B. B. Rusk as a minister, conductor, or Underground Railroad participant, and it does not by itself prove that this tract overlaps present-day Spring Grove Cemetery.
