Spring Grove Cemetery Land Purchases (1869)

← Back to Research Library

Historical source and research question

Adolphus Strauch, Spring Grove Cemetery: Its History and Improvements (1869), printed p. 96, records the cemetery's land acquisitions. Among the transactions listed are approximately 166 acres from Josiah Lawrence (1845), 40 acres from Platt Evans (1847), approximately 60 acres from Platt Evans (1857), and approximately 132½ acres from George Hill's widow and heirs (1866).

The published list does not name B. B. Rusk or John M. Cochran as direct sellers. The cemetery's 1849 incorporation amendment also mentions George Hill's property line as a boundary.

What remains unresolved

B. B. Rusk acquired 130 acres in Section 19, Township 3, in 1847 from John M. and Martha Jane Cochran. Similar acreage alone does not connect the Rusk and Hill tracts. Confirm the cemetery history's purchase list against recorded deeds and compare section, township, range, metes and bounds, and intervening owners.

Evidence boundary: This source does not establish that Rusk's land became part of Spring Grove Cemetery, nor does it identify him with Siebert's “Rev. Rusk.”
